If we categorize the problems between the U.S. and the Muslim world, we find that they fall into several identifiable areas. We can analyze the West-Muslim world divide from a political lens, an economic/socioeconomic or identity lens, a theological or belief-set lens, and from a perception lens, which is shaped by education and the media.
Neusner, et al. 2000 is an important source book for the study of ritual, custom, and law in Judaism and Islam. Goitein 2005 provides a brief introduction to various aspects of the historical relationship between Muslims and Jews. Menocal 2003 argues for a culture of tolerance between Muslims, Jews, and Christians in medieval Andalusia. He notes the way in which Christian rulers would ally themselves with Muslim rulers in fights against other Christians and their own Muslim allies.
